Using the entire 3rd floor of the old American Thread Company mill building in Holyoke, Nelson exhibits an intimate, yet powerful light installation. Small groups of four to six people will be led to the floor where they will experience a sequenced light installation within the 24,000 sq ft environment. First viewed from across the room, guests will allow their eyes to adjust to the dark as they begin to focus on a lighted space over 250 ft away, whose colors slowly blend into one another. Upon further observation, a sphere of color emerges from the space, blending in and out of a cubed form. Viewers are then allowed to travel towards the light where their sense of scale and optical experience change until they find themselves in a smaller 50’ x 20’ room, immersed in changing light with a 12’ diameter sphere also glowing with changing colors. Working with scale, perspective, space and light, Nelson creates a quiet, meditative experience that is both macrocosmic and microcosmic. While you wait to experience the piece, you may relax and enjoys refreshments in the lounge.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Holyoke Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
